Iowa woman claims $2 million Powerball prize

The Powerball winning ticket of $2 million was a surprise for 36-year-old Megan Balmer. Megan Balmer, of Garwin,  claimed her prize on Tuesday at the Iowa Lottery headquarters in Clive.

Balmer, 36, a nurse works at a home healthcare company. She and her boyfriend, Mike Ellis, purchased the easy-pick ticket Monday night, just before the sales cut-off time for that night’s Powerball drawing. Balmer’s winning ticket was purchased at Casey’s, 201 Eighth St. in Gladbrook. Balmer is looking to the future with her winnings.

After an hour, they were at home and she decided to check the results of the easy-pick ticket.

Balmer’s ticket won the $2 million Powerball prize by matching the first five numbers but missed the red Powerball number in the game’s Monday drawing. She won the $1 million prize but due to the Power Play option, her prize was multiplied to $2 million. Balmer’s ticket was the only one in the country to win a $2 million prize that night.

In Monday’s drawing, the winning Powerball numbers were 2-24-34-53-58 and Powerball 13. The Power Play was 2X.

Iowa’s newest $2 million Powerball winner plans to pay off her house and student loans and plan for retirement. But first, she hopes her sons will be winners with their entries at the local fair.
