A woman in Iowa lost everything in her home due to a tornado. But luck came after years and she won a $2 million Powerball lottery prize, which she'll use to build a new house.

Ottumwa resident Tammy Gordy won $2 million in the Powerball lottery prize. Now, she'll finally be able to complete the building of her new house.

"We were in the process of building a house, and it was put on hold for a couple of years, so now it's going to pick up," Tammy told the Iowa Lottery while claiming his prize Monday afternoon in Clive. "And it's going to go into finer details! I'm talking about a walk-in closet and a jacuzzi tub! That's what I'm talking about!"

The 56-year-old told the Iowa Lottery where she worked as a dietary aide at a local hospital. She and her husband, Steve, had lived in Agency, a tiny town with a population of about 620.

In April 2001, a tornado grabbed and destroyed the Wapello County community. The Gordys' house was demolished in the storm.

After 22 years of the storm, Tammy found herself looking at a winning Powerball ticket worth $2 million.

He realized as she remembered she was carrying some unchecked lottery tickets in her purse on Sunday morning.

Tammy's winning ticket matched the first five numbers in the Powerball drawing on Saturday, June 24, 2023. The winning numbers were 2, 38, 44, 50, and 62  but missed the Powerball number 19 to hit the $424.3 million jackpot.

Due to adding the Powerplay option her prize became doubled from $1 million to $2 million. Her Quick Pick ticket was also the only ticket in the country that match the first five numbers and won the $2 million prize that night.

The Powerball currently jackpot is $462 million. Each ticket cost $2.
